De tunnels van Củ Chi vormen een immens ondergronds netwerk tunnels gelegen in het Củ Chi-district van Ho Chi Minh-stad (Saigon), Vietnam, en maken deel uit van een veel groter netwerk van tunnels die ten grondslag liggen aan een groot deel van het land. De Củ Chi-tunnels waren de locatie van verschillende militaire campagnes tijdens de Vietnamoorlog en waren de uitvalsbasis van de Vietcong voor het Tết-offensief in 1968.

De tunnels werden door Vietcong-soldaten gebruikt als schuilplaatsen tijdens gevechten maar ook als communicatie- en aanvoerroutes, ziekenhuizen, voedsel en wapens caches en woonruimten voor talrijke Noord-Vietnamese strijders. De tunnel systemen waren van groot belang voor de Vietcong in hun verzet hiertegen Amerikaanse troepen, en hielp de groeiende Amerikaanse militaire inspanning tegen te gaan.

De dag

For the morning tour pick up (in case included) will be around 7:30-8am. Back in HCMC around 14:30. For the afternoon trip it will be 12:00-12:30pm, back in HCMC around 19:30.

Located 60km from Ho Chi Minh City, Cu Chi is now a popular spot for both Vietnamese & foreign tourists alike. The 200km network of tunnels became legendary because of their vital role in the war. In their heyday, the tunnels were fully functioning underground cities including numerous trap doors, specially constructed living areas, storage facilities, weapons factories, field hospitals, command centers & kitchens.

Today, ducks and water buffaloes happily co-exist by the rivers along the side of the road, the peaceful rice paddy scenery masking the areas violent history. Visitors find it hard to imagine the destruction, damage & defoliation throughout this whole area, caused by bombing and mines.

There is plenty of evidence of the fierce battle that took place here during the 1960’s when Cu Chi was a “Free Target Zone”.

The trip to Cu Chi will take approximately one and a half hours by bus.

Upon arrival, before exploring the tunnels, you will have some short introduction followed by introductory video about how the tunnels were constructed and how the people survived in the harsh conditions of the wartime. We then spend some time to explore the remaining area and tunnel systems which includes the special constructed living areas with kitchens, bedrooms side by side with other martial facilities like storage, weapon factories, field hospitals and command centers helping those who lived inside the tunnels to meet their basic needs. Besides this, there are many hidden trap doors and dangerous traps within the maze-like tunnels for security purpose during the war. Afterwards we serve special tea and cassava (guerilla’s food during the war).

You’ll have some spare time to relax or for those who want to try, shooting real shooting guns. We then return to Saigon for a simple lunch (only for morning tour) and to finish the trip.
